Southern League Preview: Thatcham Town vs Sholing

Just 48 hours after Thatcham’s FA Cup triumph over Andover New Street, the Blues are back in league action at the Stacatruc Stadium on Monday to face Sholing (3:00 kick off)

The Kingfishers swept Andover aside on Saturday in a 7-1 demolition to progress to the next stage of the historic cup competition.

Sholing were also successful in their Preliminary tie with Hamble, winning 1-0 at The Abbey.

The visitors have had a bumpy start to the 2019/20 campaign - losing their first fixture 3-0 against Mangotsfield before recording a comfortable 2-0 win over Basingstoke Town.

Thatcham have enjoyed a fine start to the season by beating against league newcomers Willand Rovers 2-0 before picking up a draw away to Moneyfields.

Both clubs approach Monday’s match with one thing in common: both sides are recent FA Vase winners. Thatcham raised their maiden Vase in 2018 whilst Sholing lifted the trophy four years prior.

Head-to-head

Let’s have a glimpse back at some of the previous encounters between the two teams;

Sholing 2-0 Thatcham Town (April, 2011)

It was play-off heartbreak for The Blues after goals from Marvin McClean and Lee Wort saw Sholing pick up a 2-0 win in front of a 400-plus crowd.

With goalkeeper Paul Strudley away from the squad, defender Mark James stepped in to fill the void between the sticks in an unlucky game for Town.

Thatcham Town 1-0 Sholing (March, 2011)

A late James Clark goal was enough for The Blues to take all three points against The Boatmen in the 2010/11 campaign.

The attacker had poured pressure onto the Sholing back four throughout the game but it took until the 90th minute for Clark to find a precious winner.

Sholing 2-1 Thatcham Town (February, 2011)

In the previous meeting between the two teams, Sholing ran out narrow 2-1 winners to extend their run to 14 consecutive home wins at that stage of the season.

Lee Stevens scored an unfortunate own goal before Tyronne Bowers found the net late on to give the hosts victory.

The match ball for this bank holiday fixture is sponsored by Dees Down South.
