Yash Romeo handed debuts to goalkeeper Callum Smart and Basim Mirtahmasebi at right-back, while Christian Johnson was back in the team after playing a couple of games for parent club Maidenhead. Former Kingfishers Liam Campbell, Tristan Noel and Connor Jeanes featured in the Moles’s starting line-up.
The Kingfishers made a fast start as Johnson headed a left-wing cross against the post on 3 minutes. But Thatcham didn’t have long to wait before taking the lead, as Johnson thumped another shot against the woodwork and Sam Tanner fired home the rebound.
Mo Ceesay blasted narrowly over, while Smart was forced into action a couple of times at the other end. However Town put the game beyond doubt with three further goals before half-time.
On 23 minutes Harry Hoath flicked home Kyle Daniel Spray’s near-post corner, then ten minutes later Johnson slammed home a penalty after he was upended by Binfield keeper Harvey Rackley-Hayes.
Shortly after, Tanner and Ceesay combined to set up Daniel-Spray who finished with a low right-footed shot from the edge of the box.
The second half was more even, though Thatcham still seemed the most likely side to add to the scoreline, with Ceesay seeing a headed goal disallowed for off-side.
In the closing stages Whittaker pulled one back with a header from a free-kick which looped over Smart.
David Nyarko added a fifth for Town, heading home at the near post from Owen Clark’s corner.
But Thatcham finished the game sloppily as Jimmy Bamgbose and Rechan Esprit both found the net for Binfield in injury time.
