On the 3G surface at the Exclusive Networks Stadium, former Kingfisher Matty Benham fired Alton into a fifteenth minute lead.
But five minutes later Town were level through a wonder-goal from Levi Heholt. The defender waltzed through a number of challenges and kept his composure to slot the ball into the corner.
On 50 minutes the Kingfishers scored what proved to be the winner, as Kye Williams hit a loose ball into the top corner from 25 yards.
As time progressed Thatcham retreated to preserve what they had, and thankfully survived a few nervy late moments.
The result means Thatcham are now virtually safe. Guildford City cannot overtake Cam Philbey’s side, while the bottom two sides Camberley and Eversley & California would need to finish the season with winning runs to overtake Thatcham or indeed Epsom & Ewell, Chipstead and Balham who are also not yet mathematically safe.
Thatcham still have four games left, with which they will be looking to improve on their current 15th place position. The next game is away to play-off chasing Abbey Rangers on Saturday, then the final home game is against Sutton Common Rovers on Saturday 4th April. The season concludes with trips to Tooting & Mitcham United (Monday 6th) and Chipstead (Saturday 11th).
