Avonmouth, of the Western League Division One, could have scored in the opening minute as Josh Pearce broke through but blazed over. However they did take the lead on 9 minutes when Mark Williams headed home from a corner.
Dan Smith saw a header tipped over from Archie Goode’s centre, and then was just off target from captain Archie Denton’s left-wing cross.
Pharrel Agbotey’s powerful shot was pushed wide by visiting keeper Kyresse Johnson, but Avonmouth always looked threatening through Pearce on the break.
After the break Pearce was again put through on goal but Town keeper Maciej Wieczorek made a big save with his feet. At the other end Johnson denied Smith again, with the rebound falling to Luke Bishop who struck the crossbar from the edge of the box.
But the Kingfishers found an equaliser on 71 minutes. Callum Winchcombe’s free-kick was met by Denton but blocked by the keeper, however Oliver Denner was on hand to follow-up.
With the prospect of a penalty shoot-out looming, Town found a winner nine minutes from time. Will Edwards lofted a high ball in the box which was only half-cleared and sub Jamie Barker slammed the ball home from 15 yards out.
In the closing minutes Kai Boylan fired wide and Johnson denied Agbotey as Town saw the game out to progress to the next round of the FA Vase.
