Fleet Town are currently seventh in the table, two points behind Tadley Calleva who currently occupy the final play-off spot. Last weekend Fleet conceded an injury time equaliser to draw 1-1 at home to Calleva, but scored the only goal of the game to defeat Sutton Common Rovers at their Calthorpe Park home on Tuesday.
Meanwhile three points at Camberley Town last Saturday make the league table better reading for Thatcham. That lifted the Kingfishers above Camberley and Eversley & California, but Tuesday night’s abandonment at Redhill prevented Thatcham from building further.
Back in September Thatcham’s four-game winning run came to an end at Fleet. It wasn’t the Kingfishers’ day as they fell behind to an early own goal, then saw Callum Willmoth sent off moments before Sam Bartlett made it two. Callum Winchcombe’s long-range strike offered some hope for the Kingfishers but Charlie Postance’s late penalty sealed a 3-1 home win.
The last season in which Thatcham and Fleet played in the same division was in the 2018/19 Southern League D1 South. Thatcham won the home fixture 6-0 against the division’s bottom club, with Ben Cook on target twice. Meanwhile on Boxing Day Thatcham defeated Fleet’s nine men with Shane Cooper-Clark and Adam Kelly scoring.
Ahead of the game Town manager Cameron Philbey said,
"Fleet have been going well recently and this will be a tough match. But every home game is an opportunity for us to put some more points on the board, and we need to back up last Saturday’s win. I think we are starting to look stronger; with the recent arrival of Andy Matthews the defence is about as strong as I think we can get it, while we’ve also brought in Charlie Knight to boost our options up front. Meanwhile we have started to play Curtis Angell in a more advanced position like he did at Hungerford, and that paid off at Camberley with Tyrese Georcelin fitting in really well at left-back.
We were woeful against Eversley & California and Guildford City, which was a real disappointment as we need to be taking points off teams around us - but thankfully we did turn up at Camberley. That was a massive 3 points for us and it was a really pleasing result in what has been a tough season. We didn’t suffer any jitters at any point, and away wins rarely come in as controlled a manner as that.
Meanwhile Tuesday night was very frustrating as we’re going to have to travel all the way back to Redhill again in midweek at some point. The pitch was cutting up during the warm-up when it became clear it wouldn’t be able to withstand much rain. Of course it poured down and it got to the point where it wasn’t possible to play football, and the referee didn’t have any option but to abandon it. For what it’s worth, I thought we performed well after weathering some early pressure and felt we were getting on top.
Thanks for your support and enjoy the game!"
