MATCH PREVIEW : Thatcham Town v Epsom & Ewell

Andy Morris21 Feb - 11:04

Thatcham host Epsom & Ewell in a Combined Counties Premier Division South fixture today - kick-off is at 3pm at the Mettal Stadium

Epsom & Ewell are currently 14th in table with 30 points from 26 games. Thatcham are four points behind having played an extra game, and have a four point cushion above the relegation places.

The Kingfishers have not played since the end of January due to fixture scheduling, while The Salts managed to play just their second game of 2026 in midweek. They were trailing to Sheerwater but took advantage of the visiting goalkeeper being sent off as Brendan Murphy-McVey and Obasanjo Akinniranye struck, only for Sheerwater to force a 2-2 draw in injury time.

Back in October, Epsom & Ewell hammered Thatcham 4-0 in their first game as tenants at Chessington & Hook’s ground. Alongside Akinniranye, Luke Miller (2) and Ali Fofahan found the net. However, they have not managed a home win in any of their subsequent home league games. On the road though, they have since won at Balham, Abbey Rangers and Sheerwater.

Thatcham defeated Camberley 2-0 and Fleet 3-2 last month, but rivals such as Balham and Chipstead have picked up points this month to progress up the table. In midweek Thatcham travel to Redhill while Epsom & Ewell head west again to face Eversley & California.

Ahead of the game Town manager Cameron Philbey said,

“This is a game that we definitely need to pick something up from, to help us move away from the other teams down at the bottom. We’ve had some good back-to-back performances lately, against Camberley and Fleet. I thought we were decent at Redhill before the abandonment, and even at Sheerwater we started well - there was only one team in it before a moment of madness ended up costing us.

We have a small but solid unit and I think we are stronger than we were earlier in the season. That said, we’re a bit lighter today having lost Archie Goode to Kintbury, while Kye Williams is suspended.

It has been a bit of a boring two weeks, having no fixtures due to the league’s fixture scheduling. However we’ve had four training sessions, have regrouped and designed plans for the run-in.

The teams around us have used up their games in hand, though there have also been several postponements including unfortunately Epsom & Ewell’s fixture with Tadley last weekend which it would have been useful to watch.

Our previous home game against Fleet produced an excellent three points. Nothing is more pleasing than making the people who made the club grow and who are helping it recover, go home happy. This afternoon we are desperate to win in front of our own supporters and continue to make this a difficult place for other teams to come.

Thanks for your support and enjoy the game.”
