Diddy Land Robinson

Diddy Land Robinson

Matthew Lovegrove25 Nov 2011 - 12:46

Dave Mudge, manager of Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West club Didcot Town, has swooped to sign ex-Newcastle United and Wimbledon striker Paul Robinson to help turn fortunes around.

Robinson was introduced to the Didcot crowd prior to Tuesday's defeat to Sholing. It's been the lack of goals since August that has been the Railwaymen`s biggest problem in the Southern League and currently Didcot are the lowest scorers with just ten. Robinson, 33, has had more clubs than a champion bridge player in a career spanning more than fifteen years! Born in Sunderland he spent his early years at Darlington before moving to Newcastle. It was with the Toon that he made his name and probably managed to wind-up the entire population of north-east England at the same time - Sunderland fans for a home-town boy signing for their hated rivals, and then Newcastle fans for being the player that infamously kept Alan Shearer out of the starting line-up for a derby match against – Sunderland! It was a game that Sunderland won 2-1, Robinson setting up the goal but refusing to celebrate it due to his Sunderland roots; and manager Ruud Gullitt lost his job the next day. After Newcastle he was subject to a £1m transfer to Wimbledon before a series of moves over the next decade - Carlisle, Dundee United, Hartlepool, Torquay, Grimsby Town, York City and Blackpool in the Football League. He's also a journeyman non-Leaguer having played at Whitley Bay, Maidenhead United, Consett, Hayes & Yeading United, Beaconsfield SYCOB, Jarrow Roofing and also Windsor & Eton, the club where Mudgie was manager.
