Oli Bourne fired home an early goal which proved enough to defeat Shaftesbury.
After spending last season on loan with Reading City, Town’s centre-half returned to score his first goal for the Kingfishers on 12 minutes when he volleyed home from a corner.
And Bourne came close to making it two just before half-time when he thumped a header against the bar from Callum Winchcombe’s centre.
Sam Tanner and Kyle Tooze were denied by Shane Murphy as Thatcham bounced back following their opening day defeat at Exmouth.
But Shaftesbury put Thatcham on the back foot in the second half, as Toby Bailey hit the post from a 25 yard free-kick with Town’s debutant goalkeeper Harry Cant clutching the ball on the goal-line.
Minutes later Cant and his defence survived another goalmouth scramble with the woodwork again coming to Town’s rescue.
Winchcombe curled a free-kick over the bar, then Tooze had a chance to wrap the game up after shaking off the last man but lifted his shot over the goalkeeper and bar.
Yash Romeo's side survived a long period of injury time to pick up their first points of the season and now look forward to Saturday's FA Cup tie at home to Andover New Street.
