Conor Lynch’s late goal helped Thatcham pick up a point in their 1-1 draw with Winchester City.

The Kingfishers started the first half with intensity and almost took the lead early on when Josh Helmore broke down the left.

The winger powered a low ball across the face of the Winchester goalmouth but neither Tom Moran or Shane Cooper-Clark could get a foot on the end of it.

James Tennant then went close after having his low-fired effort tipped away by Ryan Price 15 minutes into the fixture.

The Citizens started to get into the game shortly afterwards as Rob Carr linked up with Tyrell Mitford before the latter saw his deflected shot trickle wide.

But there was controversy midway into the first period after Josh Harfield brought down Tennant just inside of the box. The home side appealed for a penalty but were left frustrated after referee Neil Morrison waved play on.

Tennant then broke down the right before swinging a cross towards the back post. Cooper-Clark attempted a diving header but his effort flew high and wide.

Just a minute later, Winchester took the lead. The reds broke well before finding Carr on the edge of their penalty area. The winger’s well-timed flick allowed Jamie Barron through on goal where he found the bottom corner first time.

The away side had their best opportunity to double the lead early in the second half.

Simba Mlambo’s burst through the Thatcham defence left him one-on-one with Town goalkeeper Chris Rackley; but the attacker poked his effort inches wide of the near post.

The away side then withdrew Mitford, who bagged the winner in Winchester’s 3-2 win in the reverse fixture in August, after the striker picked up an injury.

Thatcham found their rhythm but had to wait until the 80th minute to get an equaliser.

They capitalised after Winchester failed to clear a deep throw-in and the ball fell to substitute Conor Lynch, who made no mistake in finishing from close range.

A late flurry of chances from Helmore and Lewis Coyle almost saw the Kingfishers pinch all three points but Winchester held out for the remaining moments.

The draw means Danny Robinson’s team remain three points behind today’s opposition with a game in hand.
