Development Team win their 2nd game to end Yateley's 100% start to the season
Thatcham travelled to Yateley looking to end the hosts 100% start to the season and did so with a comprehensive victory.
Town imposed their free flowing passing football from the start stroking it around with the midfield trio of Randall, Carrington and Montero finding pockets of space to hurt the hosts, the first chance of the game went Thatcham’s way as Montero tested the Yateley keeper from an Andy Miller knockdown, the first goal of the game came following some good interchange play between Niall Aspell and Michael Miller with the later being fouled for a free kick out wide.
Randall’s delivery was cleared only for Thierry Carrington to unleash a half volley which left the keeper helpless and it clipped the underside of the bar on its way in. Yateley barely threatened but were awarded a penalty to level the scores after a tangle of legs between Carrington and the Yateley striker ended up with them both hitting the deck. Liam Harris in the Thatcham goal guessed the right way but was beaten by the power of the pen. That didn’t faze the visitors and they went straight back in the front foot with some excellent link up play down the left between the combination of Tom Browne, Andy Miller and Jordan Goater. This led to a a couple of excellent balls whipped into the box, with the most notable chance falling to Michael Miller from a Browne cross following a 1-2 between Andy Miller and Browne but Michael Miller was just a whisker away from turning it in due as he dove in, Thatcham regained the lead through Aaron Randall, Andy Miller closed down a Yateley defender causing him to make a rash clearance which found Michael Miller his penetrating run at the heart of the Yateley defence drew the other CB across and he slipped the ball into the on rushing Randall who fired across the keeper and into the far corner in off the post.
Wave upon wave of Thatcham's attack continued with the best chance falling to Michael Miller who gambled on an Andy Miller flick on and his attempted lob from 30+ yards bounced wide, Thatcham soon had a third after so more neat play down the right from Aspell and Michael Miller allowed the latter to find Montero and he took aim from 20 yards and found the corner.
Yateley needed the half time whistle and ref duly obliged. Yateley had the first chance of the second half as a long ball over the top caught out Browne but the Yateley wingers touch was heavy allowing Harris to come and gather it. Thatcham’s first chance of the second half fell to Andy Miller who rolled his marker following a defence splitting ball from Browne’s quick free kick and brought a smart save from the Yateley keeper. Michael Miller then flashed a header just over the bar from another Browne delivery after some good play between Browne and Goater. Goater was then denied a clear run at goal due to a very debatable offside flag. Tom Jordan replaced Andy Miller around the 70 min mark as Thatcham looked to tighten up and mange the game and that 2 mins later Liam Parry replaced the injured Elliot King. Thatcham’s midfield duo of Carrington and Randall were bossing the midfield with the pace of Goater and Michael Miller causing real problems for the Yateley defence, a couple of half chances for Montero came to nothing although he did have the ball in the net after some good interchange play with Michael Miller but it was ruled out for offside. Miller then robbed the keeper out wide and found Montero again but his shot was blocked by some good recovery defending from the Yateley skipper.
Harris who was a spectator for most of the game pulled off two fantastic saves in quick succession before Aspell was replaced by Ben Ashfield. Yateley tried to throw everything at the Thatcham goal in the last 5 mins but the Thatcham defence stood firm led by the phenomenal Bebbington who didn’t give the Yateley strike force a sniff all game. The final whistle blew and with it Yateley’s 100% start to the season
